A Little Casio History

The history of Casio is quite interesting, as it is one of the few watch companies that began in a totally different industry.  Casio originally began as a calculator company.  but once the electronic watches became the standard, Casio used its extensive electronics expertise to gain a share in the watch making market.  Casio watches were first released in 1974, 17 years after they began making calculators.  The first Casio watch was a chronometer called the Casitron, which was ahead of its time.  This watch contained automatic date adjustments for longer and shorter months, and for leap years.  Following the release of this original watch, Casio continued to capture a good share in the watch market, releasing more advanced watches each time.

Today Casio's most popular product is the G-Shock and Baby-G line of watches, named  for their shock resistance.  These watches are aimed at the sports enthusiast, and are known for their sturdy construction.  They are available in a wide range of styles for men and women, including one style that boasts a 10-year battery, and others that are powered by sunlight or artificial light.  G-Shock watches contain sports training functions such as a stopwatch, time elapse features and multiple alarms.  The most recent release of the G-Shock also contains a memory function, which allows the user to store email addresses and URL's.  The memory funtion is limited, allowing the storage of only about seven addresses or websites, but is still a sought after feature in the watch market today.  All in all, Casio is one of the best choices in the market for the sports minded person who's in search of rugged and affordable timepieces.
